The Importance of AMICUS Registration in Switzerland

In Switzerland, every dog owner must register their pet in the AMICUS Switzerland system. This is not just an administrative formality — it is a crucial step to ensure your dog’s safety, facilitate identification, and contribute to a responsible community.

AMICUS registration ensures that each dog has a unique number and a clear record that can be accessed by veterinarians, authorities, and shelters.

AMICUS: What Exactly Is It?

AMICUS is the official database that records all dogs in the country. When your dog is registered, they receive an AMICUS identification number linked to:

  • your contact details,
  • the dog’s main information,
  • their microchip number.
This system makes it possible to quickly locate an owner if a dog is lost, injured, or found in a public space — a major advantage for your pet’s safety.

When Should You Register Your Dog?

You have 3 months after adopting a dog or after arriving in Switzerland to complete the registration. A delay may result in a fine — so it’s best to take care of it without waiting.

Benefits of AMICUS Registration

Easily Find a Lost Dog (AMICUS Dog)

Thanks to the AMICUS number, shelters and veterinarians can contact you immediately if your pet is found. It is one of the most reliable ways to recover a lost dog.

A Valuable Tool for Public Health

AMICUS allows authorities to monitor the dog population, better understand the emergence of certain diseases, and improve animal management within the cantons. It is an important tool for the safety and well-being of everyone.

What Should the Owner Do Before AMICUS Registration in Geneva?

The procedure starts at the police — an important detail that many new owners are unaware of. Here are the steps to follow:

Go to the Police to Create Your AMICUS Profile (Person ID)
The municipal police create your owner profile in AMICUS.
Without this profile, the veterinarian cannot register your dog.
To bring:
  • ID document
  • Current address
  • Complete contact details

Check for a Microchip
If your dog is not yet microchipped, the veterinarian can do it during the appointment. If the microchip is already in place, note or bring its number.

Prepare Your Personal Information
AMICUS requires:
  • First and last name
  • Date of birth
  • Address in Switzerland
  • Phone number
  • Email

Prepare Your Dog’s Information
Including:
  • Breed or type
  • Sex
  • Date of birth
  • Pedigree (if available)

If the Dog Comes from Abroad
Bring:
  • European or international passport
  • Proof of rabies vaccination
  • Document with the microchip number
